<DIV><IMG title="Wind and Solar energy" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 5px" height=314 alt="Wind and Solar energy" src="http://www.thegreenpages.com.au/resources/windsolar.jpg" width=235>A Stanford University <A href="http://www.nirs.org/climate/background/stanfordstudylistsenergysourcesbesttoworst.pdf" target=_blank>study</A>, released in December last year, ranks renewable energy and vehicle options from best to worst. </DIV>
<DIV><BR>The study, headed by Mark Z. Jacobson, a professor of civil and e<A href="http://www.thegreenpages.com.au/index.asp?page_id=48">nvironmental engineering</A> at Stanford, helps policy makers determine the best emerging technologies to support. The European Commission, says substantial investment in development of alternative energy sources is needed in order to meet greenhouse gas emissions targets. But policymakers must make tough choices when deciding which energy sources and emerging technologies to support. </DIV>
<DIV><BR>According the Jacobson's study, wind came out on top, along with concentrated solar, while nuclear and carbon capture proved less promising. In terms of vehicles, battery electric vehicles rose above hydrogen fuel cells, with both coming up above biofuel alternatives. </DIV>
<DIV>"The energy alternatives that are good are not the ones that people have been talking about the most," Jacobson said. "We should be spending to promote energy technologies that cause significant reductions in carbon emissions and air-pollution mortality, not technologies that have either marginal benefits or no benefits at all".</DIV>
<DIV>Most experts, including Jacobson, would agree that any future investments should be a "package deal" that incorporates investments in a number of technologies including wind, tidal, solar, wave and geothermal power. </DIV>
