Dear Mukhtar,
It has been pointed out to me that your email refers to "debt-free" money i.e. 'printed' non-repayable money.

I had assumed that this was a mistake and "interest-free" issuance (i.e. repayable loans to be cancelled) was intended because debt-free isssuance is generally unacceptable to Muslims because of its perceived inflationary consequences.

Your article is a little unclear about this matter but there can be some debt-free issuance in counter-inflationary circumstances (as set out in Seven Steps to Justice, 2002) and/or in circumstances of completely stopping the banking system from creating new money (as in James Robertson, Creating New Money) but this needs to be spelt out clearly and any loose reference to a general "debt-free" issuance will usually provoke the response of "Funny money".

GJM members might like to have a look at www.simpol.org.uk/forum/index.php?board=6.0 "Proposed additional text for this policy" where an attempt is being made by Peter Challen to reach agreement with Simpol.

GJM members are invited to comment (on GJM Discussion) on Peter's work in Simpol.

Rodney Shakespeare.
