This came from another list, but lots of good info here
on container gardening for those who are hard pressed
in this economy to make ends meet. For those in
colder regions, enclosing a porch for winter growing
works with containers also.

Subject: CONTAINER GARDENING in Costa Rica.

Amazing what you can grow in containers. All your lettuces, chives,
zapallo, radishes and tomatos.....good savings.

Even in a condo or townhouse, you can garden cheaply. Your big
outlay will be conditioned soil, and cheap containers. I have
started buying large size tomatos in cans, other big canned items.
I use the product, then I have the can for planting.

You may fork out about $100 initially for containers, in order to
get enough of them to start your container garden. I found big
recycled rubber containers...about 10 gal. containers.....at a
little Ferreteria, for $4. apiece, half the price of EPA.

You can get seeds by the ounce in Costa Rica. Guy even gave me a
little bag of sunflower seeds free. Free! Wow!

Now, a neighbor is donating chicken shit to me, cured, for
fertilizer. I am buying some on sale bags of compost, about $1.50
per bag at Hipermas.

Ready, set, plant your seeds. Initially you are not saving
money. But, after you have replanted using your initial outlay on
containers, you are reaping the economical benefits of this.

Everytime you save buying lettuces and other fresh veg at the store,
you save maybe $12 to $15 per week if you family is four. This is
here in Costa Rica. Then, you save because you were not tempted by
the bag of Doritos and the bottle of Imperial.

Add benefits of working as exercize. Add the fact that this will be
Organic Produce.

Add the benefit of Your Pride in producing these veggies.

Even a savings of $12 per week x 52 weeks...got a calculator?....is
more than $500 per year. Subtract the cost of say, 10 big pots at
$4. apiece if you are lucky to find them......thats only $40. Look
at what you bought with your savings.

Or, your veg produce paid for your weekly outlay for say, a small
amt. of chicken or fish.

How cool is that? Now multiply this by increasing your garden
size. Now...see the savings?

Anybody got a recipe for LOTS AND LOTS OF zucchini? DID YOU SAY
GINGER MUFFINS....DID YOU SAY ZUCCHINI PANCAKES TO GO WITH AN
ORIENTAL STIR FRY? ZUCCHINI in breads? OK OK. I AM GONNA DO
PUMPKIN TOO.

Grow a container garden. I will report on mine later.

have a green day.
