This giant hydroponic greenhouse it is argued is
sustainable. With TFE more projects like this could be
financed in full, or in part thus hastening human progress.
I know its unfashionble to say this but I do believe in the need of safe,
and sustainable "tech-no" fixes as opposed to this growing but
understandable obsession with self-sufficienty, and "small is beautiful!"

Comment from Mary Rose: Robert, it is my opinion that in order for their to
be Global Justice, that no one should have to be dependent upon any one else
for their food supply. The commericialization and commodification of our
food supply, which constitutes putting control in the hands of a few has not
worked in the past and will not work even in a green configuration.
What we are talking about here is "ownership" and everyone should be
involved in ownership of the food supply so that commodities markets cannot
exist which put the food supply into the hands of "commodity traders" as is
happening now and driving the price sky high so taht a few make money off of
the system. Naughty, naughty. .
This Earth was provided for all of us with no one human or animal having
more rights than any other over its bounty. When resources are allocated
with "fair share for all," then justice is served. When resources are
misallocated it is not. And, we ALL have been given the responsibility to
serve as "Earth Stewards" and ensure that ALL are included in fair share,
and, as well to ensure that in allocating fair share today we ensure that
there will be fair share for future generations.
What works is if small communities, no more than 250 - 600 people own the
resources of the community, and have enacted CC&Rs to ensure that the Earth
is taken care of, and eco-systems are maintained in peak operating condition
so that maximum carrying capacity can be met without stressing the system.
In this instance, a giant hydroponic greenhouse would be appropriate as it
would be owned by all those residing in the community and ensure that fair
share was distributed equitably. And, that once the needs of the community
were satisified, if market conditions were appropriate (beneficial to the
community) then any "excess produce" could be sold into the market.
However, if any other community was found to be lacking in sufficient
produce to meet the needs of that community, then any excess produce would
be sent to that community so that ALL may be fed.
Linked via the Internet with continual updates as to status of each
community made weekly, any needs could be met immediately and prior to any
crisis arising.
As I have noted previously, research shows that in order for a group to be
"self-organizing and managing" no more than 250 - 600 participants be
involved. Resource: Am not sure of this, but think it is: Jared Diamond,
author of "Guns, Germs, and Steel." Diamond has written a tremdous amount
on "self-organization" and his work is well recognized as he is a Pulitzer
Prize winner. http://www.pulitzer.org/year/1998/general-non-fiction/works/
I have read his "Guns, Germs, and Steel" before, but it is on my "reread"
list as it contains so much information which connects his/herstory and
biology, and his new book "Collapse" is also on my "to read" list.
With love and in gratitude, Robert for all that you do, and all that we do
together. (See link below.)

Robert:
Hopefully the relevant link below may work.
Welcome to Thanet Earth: The biggest greenhouse in Britain
unveiled
You've heard of the factory chicken. Now meet the
factory vegetable. Grown in their millions in trays of
nutrient-enriched water inside a heated, artificially-lit
greenhouse large enough to house ten football pitches, they
are as far as you can get from 'natural' home-grown
food.
