This is an interesting slide show from the New York Times
on raising food vertically in large cities.

The questions this brings up for me are 1) with regard to sufficiency of water supply
unless it is recycled and purified right on the premises; and, 2) as to.how healthy big
city living really is when one is surrounded with cement and little chance to make
the necessary contact with the earth in order to maintain the subtle energy connection
vital to maintaining health that we've discussed earlier. .

Research studies now suggest that an emotional dissociation from the earth has
been enhanced by riding in automobiles and watching TV. So questions arise as
to how our environment effects our mental well being in these circumstances. Do
we need a natural environment similar to that inherent at the beginning of the social
evolution of the human family in order to maintain a healthy emotional state?

I cannot help but think about the statistics provided by the NIH that almost 30% of
the population of the U.S. is legally insane. And, if the environment in which we live
is the determining factor, then what are we doing to ourselves by living and working
in high rise buildings and in places like steel mills, coal mines and assembly lines,
especially where beef carcasses are disassembled along with other animals, and
sending our children now to schools, as we have ourselves in the past, where teachers
direct teaching to the left brain. What did the Industrial Age do to us?
