Dear Myro,
Thankyou for replying.
I think we have sufficiently debated most of the monetary matters for the moment but GJM members will certainly be interested in Bill Ryan's views on 9/11 Tower Number Seven which collapsed without being hit by an aeroplane.
1. It is not true that they did not know the building was going to collapse. About twenty minutes before the collapse a BBC report announced that it was going to collapse and then the long-leaseholder owner of the World Trade center properties (Larry Silverstein) said they were going to "pull it" -- admittedly, an imprecise phrase.
2. But the BBC and Silverstein can be left aside. No other buildings in the world with a bit of fire in them have suddenly collapsed into their own footprint -- heh, heh -- (as did the two other Trade Center towers ); and no other skyscraper building in the world has done this on a day -- heh -- when two other skyscrapers collapsed into their own footprint.
3. I have read the Wikipedia article on Tower Number Seven and it does not say the obvious -- if the building fell as a result of some debris hitting it and some fire then, at the very least, American builders and architects are a menace to the world and NO skyscraper building will ever be safe from instantaneous collapse (into its own footprint, of course).
Bill cannot have this matter both ways. Either the building was demolished (he might care to have a look at the videos and see the explosive squibs coming out of the corners) and, if not convinced, he can then only conclude that the American building industry cannot be trusted to erect a pigeon loft safe from fire let alone a modern skyscraper.
That conclusion is further reinforced by the information you have given -- there's a bit of fire and the building collapses because, allegedly, there was no water. Haven't you Americans ever heard of foam inlets for your buildings -- or is that too high-tech for you? According to you and Bill it only needs one water pipe to be broken and then it's not anybody's fault that a building collapses -- heh, heh -- into its own footprint.
All in all, the most charitable view of the situation is that it reflects massive American incompetence in design, engineering and building and sheer negligence to protect against straightforward fire. Does Bill.have an office in an American skyscraper? If so, I suggest that he end the lease immediately and set up his office elsewhere -- preferably no more than two stories above ground.
Rodney Shakespeare.
PS. I am surprised to see you saying there were no football games yesterday. That sounds as if you are sulky because there were no games for you to attend. If you are going to succeed you must forego football and work hard.
