You English, Scottish and Irish people are such funny blokes.
How on Earth? have you guys influenced world events to the extent you
have?
My wife and I were lucky enough to finally visit Scotland in 2006.
On our tour of Edinburgh, we came across the Edinburgh Civil War
Memorial, which is the only Civil War Memorial outside the US. It is
dedicated to the Scots who fought in the Union Army who lost their
lives there. I thought to myself, "Gee, these guys got involved in
everything going on throughout the world." What kind of a person
would be living in Scotland, hear about the War Between the States an
ocean away, and say to himself –– "I'm getting involved even if it
gets me killed?!"
There are not many people living in many other countries throughout
the world that seemed to be as involved in events worldwide as people
in the British Isles. I guess it has to do with remnants of the
British Empire and all, but maybe it was a start to the undeniable
realization that all humans are connected. We need to set up
accountable world governance so that our inalienable relationships
can be productively and democratically engaged. We can also see this
playing out in the GJM and monetary/corporate banking reform.
Humor must have something to do with it, too.
I say, keep it up!!
Your US correspondent and pal,
Steve Nieman
