Dear Bill,

This program is similar to what Ecological Designer Jim Bell and myself, along with others. proposed to the Mexican government in the Hands Across the Border: Operation Lifesave project. Only the "campesinos" participating would have been trained through "hands-on experiential" self-learning programs in all aspects of sustainable living practices, not just in agriculture.

But, I do believe that it is a mistake to do just agriculture because this is something that cannot be "particalized". It requires seeing and understanding the "whole dynamic" of a community and the fragile ecosystems in which it rests. And, no two ecosystems are alike so there are no "one size fits all" solutions.Which is why Jim Bell recommends that the "territory be mapped" prior to doing any construction or turning of soil, etc. so that one understands the physiology of the region and everything that will effect it and how any change made in the region will effect everything else.

This is the major part of our problem in that we have "specialized" and "segmented" and "divided" without considering cause and effect. And, this is what the study of "Holodynamics" is about. We live in a Universe where there are no beginnings and endings. And learning Holodynamics is to understand that everything is information and everything communicates, and everything is connected to everything else.

So, it has to be about more than just food and self-reliance. One has to consider all of the dynamics of any given situation. This is what the concept I have proposed for "Community Learning and Information Centers" is formulated on.

I do hope that Marion Brady is one of the people involved in this effort.

While this sounds good, please pardon my skepticism of these kinds of things, having been involved in designing a very large project which the wealthy of Mexico did not want to see put into effect because it would have spoiled their little game of keeping Mexico poverty-stricken in order to provide a low cost labor force for the U.S.

BE:
This echos the goal The World Food Project mission to grow a thoughtful
and productive community of youth and adults from diverse backgrounds
who work together to build a sustainable food system. We produce
healthy food for residents of the city and suburbs and provide youth
leadership opportunities. Most importantly, we strive to inspire and
support others to create change in their own communities. And of Colin
Trudge's "It's Easy to Feed all the People."

One of their project is to create a food peace corps for nutrition and
horticultural experts who will serve in all regions of the world,
including the USA, to determine 1) what nutrition do the people of the
area need, 2) what local crops can most cheaply provide it, 3)
provide training a support for local communities to become
self-reliant, and 4) to promote market techniques and government
programs to support local self-reliance.

This food corps would spend one year interning on a small farm and two
years on assignment to a food short community.
Anything beyond the minimal food needs would still be for the market
system to provide.

The agricultural reform would have two levels 1) the local minimal
nutrition market, and 2) the global market. 1) would pay not tax and
receive government support. 2) would be pure laissez faire market with
no subsidies.

If anyone knows anyplace, except Cuba, that is moving in this
direction. Let us know.
