[GJM] Is Money Obsolete

A very interesting discussion.

Metaphors can be a great aid to thinking about complex issues. Here a slip of logic is revealed when well itself is assumed to be the source of poison. The rest of the reasoning then cannot go right.

The well is the ability to create money tokens virtually out of nothing.
Interest is the poison added to the well. I agree that the first step is to stop drinking the poisoned water and make sure that no more poison is being added. Fortunately it is clear what the poison is, and who is adding it to the money supply.

To shut down the well and go back to collecting dew or waiting for the next rain would not be a wise thing.

Only in an ideal society could money be dispensed with.
When people do things for a love of doing them, the fruits are gladly given away to others. And one's own needs will be supplied because everyone else is doing their own thing for the love of it and are happy to share resulting fruits with their community.

Maybe this is a metaphor to describe a future Garden of Eden.

  ...
  Now imagine
this tribe digs a well and can quench its thirst fairly easy.

Except that someone starts poisoning the well, causing

    illness.

Stupid is as stupid does. Isn't that what we are doing today to the planet? Why does "stupid" think poisoning the well is a good idea? Every crime has a motive, or at least an explanation.

A wiseman of the village will look at the entire

history, at examples of unpoisoned wells (i.e. the Guesney

Island experiment for money, New Zealand's success in

climbing out of the depression before WWII ) and so on.

Shutting down the well and killing most of the populace

(i.e. eliminating the money system) would not enter into

the thought stream of anyone that understood the concept.

I think the wiseman would tell everyone not to drink from the poisoned well, and then try to find out why the well was poisoned and who poisoned it.

...The Well is the taking of Interest... We need to stop drinking from it; it will make you sick!...
