                    PRESS STATEMENT

It is horrifying to see that despite the
widespread condemnation for this 'Fatwa' culture, once
again a few repulsive and worthless 'Maulanas' have
resorted to their old obnoxious practice - this time
to advance the cause of their political masters.
The Bareilvi maulana who has issued Fatwa against
Chowdhry Basheer for offering 'arti' in temple, seems
to be the buffoon of Congress or BSP, while Mr. Khalid
Rasheed who has come to the defence of SP legislator
is a known crony of Mulayam Singh yadav. Thus both
these 'so-called maulanas' are inspired, not by the
postulates of Islam , but by the loyalties to their
godfathers. Whether Islamic or un-Islamic, but it has
now become a reality of Indian secularism that one has
to resort to all the un-Islamic activities if one has
to enter and survive in politics. These are the ways
left for Muslims to establish their secular and
nationalistic credentials. A few months back, the UP
Congress President, Salman Khursheed, was shown in the
newspapers and TV channels performing 'Hawan' on the
birth day of Mrs Sonia Gandhi.

These politicians, undoubtedly, have no character,
and to describe their activities on the anvil of
Islamic fundamentals is an exercise in self-deception.
However, the 'maulanas' like Mr. Khalid Rasheed and
others of his brand are the most notorious species of
the Muslim community, because they are serving their
political ambitions under the garb of Islam, and for
their insatiable desire to appear before the media can
go to any extent. The political parties who are
utilising the services of this nasty breed of Muslim
clergy are doing irrepairable loss to the country as
also to the interest of the entire Muslim community.

Firangi Mahal opposes fatwa against MLA
M Hasan, Hemendra Chaturvedi
Lucknow/Agra, January 16

THE FATWA (edict) controversy involving the
Samajwadi Party MLA from Agra Chaudhury Basheer for
attending “arti” at a temple today took an interesting
turn with the “Darul Ifta” (centre of fatwa) Firangi
Mahal of Lucknow strongly denouncing the edict issued
by Madarsa Darul Ifta of Bareilly.

Basheer, who had resorted to a sit-in against an
incident of theft at the Hanuman temple in Agra Cantt
area a few days ago, had joined the devotees during
the “arti” at the temple. Terming it as an
“anti-Islamic” act, the Bareilly madarsa had issued an
edict against him. It had directed Basheer to undergo
“Tauba” (pardon) and “Tasdiq-e-nikah” (fresh nikah).

But Naib Imam Eidgah and head of Darul Ifta Firangi
Mahal Maulana Khalid Rashid Firangi Mahli told
Hindustan Times on Tuesday that there was no harm if a
person stood along with his Hindu brethren at an
“arti”.

“It did not amount to offering puja to idols. Hence,
his action can’t be called anti-Islamic,” Rashid said
adding, “It should be seen as promoting national
integration and upholding country’s secular values”.

He said a large number of Hindus come to the Eidgah on
Eid but “that doesn’t mean they offer namaz”. In any
case, such action could not lead to invalidation of
nikah (marriage), he said adding, “The fatwa issued by
the Bareilly madarsa was wrong and unfortunate”.

Rashid said the MLA had resorted to a noble cause of
pressuring the police for a breakthrough in the temple
theft case.

Basheer, apart from attending the ‘arti’, even got
‘Shree Ram Narain Manka’ published and distributed
amongst the devotees as his ‘gesture’ for communal
harmony. The issue has ever since invited varied
reaction, both for and against the MLA.

Chaudhary Basheer was elected to the state assembly
from Agra Cantt on a Bahujan Samaj Party ticket. He
later defected to the Samajwadi Party.
