The relationship of beef (cows) to religion goes way back and way
forward.
In Mithras, the homd of St. Paul, cows were sacrificed on an alter.
Undher the alter young men gathered to bath in the blood and catch it
to drink. Paul took this practice to Christianity but turned it to
drinking human bloos -- the blood of Jesus. We still do it.
Eco:
Bill, you are quite right. Women also bathed their faces in blood from
the bulls sacrificed. In the Mithraic religion, the bulls were worshipped
for their virility and only the finest and largest bulls were sought out for
sacrifice. The bulls represented the "gods" of that era and it was felt
that men could gain virility by drinking the blood of the bull. .
Many of the traditions associated with the Mithraic religion such as
blood sacrifice" were incorporated into Christianity as you say. For
example, The "Great Earth Mother" worshipped for millions of years
as the "giver of life" became "Mary, The Virgin Mother" when Pope
Constantine chose Christianity over Mithraism as the official religion
of that time in 325, when the Council of Nicea took place -- as a tool
to "social engineer" (enculturate) masses of people.
Likewise, the bull then became a "human god" along with his son. The
Holy Ghost represented "human consciousness" for the ancients had
no way of explaining at that time what they considered to be "spirit"
except through mythological representation.
