With respect, Straw is an extremely skillful politician, to imagine he did not realise what the effect of his comments would be is in my view seriously naive. 

There was doubtless a debate to be had about the separateness of German Jews in the 1930's, but something tells me that it would not have been wise to promote it at that time. The reality is that the pro-Israel lobby and the
military-industrial complex are doing their best to stir up hatred towards Muslims any way they can as a way of bolstering their war which has killed tens of thousands of innocent people so far with no end in sight. 

Straw has described himself as a "lifelong friend of Isreal", call me suspicious but given his background and behavior this sound to me like an admission he is the agent of influence of a criminal and belligerent foreign power. At the very least he is engaged in contemptible dog whistle politics
to bolster his standing in the upcoming Labour elections.
