MUSIRI,

DEC. 23.

The Government and cooperative banks should provide interest-free loans to farmers who have been badly hit by the recurring drought conditions, the State president of the National Agriculturists Awareness Movement, T. S. Praburaja, said.

Speaking at a farmers' awareness programme organised by the Lioness Club of Musiri here recently, he said the conversion of cooperative loans into medium-term loans would do no good to the farmers. The Government should write off the principal along with interest and penal interest. Moreover it should also come forward to provide fresh loans.

He said the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board should give power connections to all those whose names have been waitlisted and they should be enrolled for free power supply.

Mr. Praburaja wanted the Government to provide 20 kg of rice to all farm labourers along with Rs. 250 in cash for the forthcoming Pongal. All distraint proceedings launched against the farmers for non-payment of dues to insurance companies and land development banks should be scrapped, he added.

The district president of the Lions Clubs, R. Sekaran, the state general secretary of the Bharathiya Kisan Sangh, P. Ayyakannu, the president of the district unit of the Farmers Awareness Movement, Balasubramanian, the president of the Lions Club of Musiri, M. Subramanian also spoke at the meeting, which was presided over by Meera Mohan, president of the Lioness Club of Musiri.
